Types of Work Permits in Canada:

There are two types of temporary work permits in Canada:

  • Open work permits

  • Employer-specific work permits (closed)

The advantage of an open work permit is that the holder is not limited to one employer and may work in any location in Canada.

Who can apply for an Open Work Permit?

The following applicants may be eligible for an open work permit:

  • Students who have graduated from a designated learning institution in Canada (post-graduation work permit).

  • Spouses and common-law partners of some workers and international students.

  • Temporary residents in Canada looking to be sponsored by their spouses or common-law partners.

  • Refugees, refugee claimants, protected persons and their family members.

  • Dependent family members of some permanent residence applicants.

  • Young workers applying for a Working Holiday permit through the International Experience Canada stream.

However, you should note that you must meet additional criteria in each of these situation in order to be eligible.
