New easier rules for the Post-Graduate Work Permit

On February 14th, 2019. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has just released a statement regarding the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).

The new measures are meant to facilitate the conditions for students to obtain a PGWP after their studies.

The new rules are as follows:

1. A valid study permit is no longer required when applying for a post-graduate work permit

2. The deadline to submit your post-graduate work permit is extended from 90 days to 6 months.

Eligiblity for the Post-Graduate Work Permit:

  • Completed an eligible program from a Canadian institution that is at least 8 months in duration which leads to a degree, diploma or certificate

  • Maintained full-time status in Canada during each semester of the program (exemption: leave of studies or final semester)

  • Received a transcript and official attestation from the school confirming graduation

Within 6 months of applying for a PGWP, applicants must also meet 1 of the following requirements:

  • Hold a valid study permit

  • Held a valid study permit within the last 6 months

  • Were authorized to study in Canada without a study permit

Students are still only allowed only 1 PGWP in their lifetime.
